SNAP OUT OF THE SEASONAL FUNK
The excitement of the new year has fizzled, days are short, and we’re all sorely lacking Vitamin D. It’s the typical time of year when we’re all wandering around “in a funk”. But those pesky “winter blahs” can be beaten! There are several tricks to snapping out of the seasonal slump, all of which can be conveniently practiced here at Castle Hill Fitness.
UP-LIFTING EXERCISE
In recent years, weight training has gained incredible momentum for its many benefits. Improved muscle mass, better posture, mobility, balance, bone health… the list goes on! Studies have shown that resistance training has an immense positive impact on the symptoms of depression. The benefits aren’t tied to the amount of weight being lifted, or the quantity of weekly practice either. Just the act of consistently practicing is enough to boost your mood! The effects of weight training have been reported to be immediate – you saunter right out of your workout.
JUMP FOR JOY
When in doubt, bounce it out. We offer several Rebound (mini-trampoline) classes on our weekly schedule, and their benefits go beyond an effective workout! The act of jumping boasts several mood-boosting benefits. Jumping helps release serotonin, a chemical that regulates your mood, boosts endorphins, and increases oxygen intake, which can help energize and improve concentration.
With our Rebound classes, you’ll get the added perks of strength training and fun music to bring a smile to your face!
YOGA HEART OPENERS
Any form of exercise offers mental health benefits – yoga, in particular, is known for its antidepressant effects. It is a practice of being in the present moment as you connect your awareness to your breath and body, which helps to calm the mind and soothe the nervous system. Many styles of yoga focus on passive, restorative moves. Hatha yoga, for example, emphasizes physical movements, meditative exercises, and breathwork. And when those freezing winter winds come blowing in, hop into a heated yoga to fire up those perks even more! Heated yoga sessions may bolster your practice and mood even further, and are just straight-up cozy.
MASSAGE
Getting a massage is more than just a pamper session! Not only does it feel amazing, massage work also boosts serotonin and dopamine. These endorphins help decrease the effects of anxiety and depression.
Massages also help reduce cortisol, a stress hormone that accumulates as a result of physical and mental stress. High levels of cortisol can lead to issues with sleep, digestion, increased anxiety, and more. Massage lulls the body into a relaxed, restorative state, aiding in reducing cortisol.
